Peat bogs and heathlands are two different types of natural landscapes that are often found together. They both offer unique ecosystems that are essential for biodiversity and the health of our planet. We will take you on this walk.

Practical information

On Saturday morning: meet at 9:00 a.m., return at 2:00 p.m.

Peatlands and heathlands are two different types of natural landscapes that are often found together. They both provide unique ecosystems that are essential for biodiversity and the health of our planet.

Peat is a type of wetland characterized by its watery environment and unique soil. It is formed when plant material does not decompose completely and accumulates in shallow water. The oxygen-poor environment prevents the material from decomposing completely, causing it to eventually turn into peat. Peatlands are important because they store large amounts of carbon and play an important role in water purification. In addition, they provide an important habitat for plants and animals that are specifically adapted to the conditions of peatlands.

Heathlands are another type of landscape that is often found in nature reserves and are characterized by their open, hilly or rolling plains covered with heather plants. Heathlands are often found on soil types with a low pH value and are an important habitat for various species of flora and fauna. Many bird species, such as the nightjar, use heathlands as breeding grounds, while reptiles and small mammals use the shelter of the heath vegetation to forage and hide.

Both landscapes are threatened by human activities such as deforestation, pollution, excessive agriculture, and climate change. To preserve and protect these areas, it is important to work on sustainable solutions and restore natural systems. This can be achieved, for example, by reducing pollution and preserving existing vegetation, allowing both peatlands and heathlands to thrive.
