What is it?

You apply for a passport at the municipality. After 6 working days, you can pick up your passport. When applying digitally, you can choose to have your passport delivered. For example, at home, or at your work.
This costs €6.95.  

Rush request

If you need your passport quickly, make an urgent application. If you request the passport before 2 p.m., you can pick it up the next business day. You do have to pay extra for an urgent application.

Traveling with children

  • Children must have their own travel documents and may no longer be credited in their parents' passports.
  • If you are traveling abroad with your child and you have a different last name from your child, you will need proof that you are the father or mother or have parental authority.

How does it work?

How long is my passport valid? 

  • Passport 18 years or older: 10 years
  • Passport up to 17 years: 5 years
  • Business Passport: 10 years
  • Second passport: 2 years

Business Passport

If you travel frequently (for example, for work), you can apply for a business passport. This is a normal passport, but has twice as many pages for stamps.

Second passport

You can apply for a second passport if you:

If you wish to apply for a second passport, the following conditions apply:

  • Your current passport is still valid for at least 6 months.
  • You can prove that you need the second passport.

What to do.

  • You apply for a passport in person at the municipality.
  • When you apply for a passport for your child, bring your child with you.
  • Your passport will contain your fingerprints. Make sure your fingers are clean.
  • Children under 12 do not need to be fingerprinted.
  • You pick up your passport in person.
  • When you pick up a passport for your child, bring your child with you.
  • If you want to keep your old passport, you must specifically ask for it. Otherwise, your old passport will be destroyed.

Physical or intellectual disability

If a physical or mental disability prevents you from applying for a passport in person, a municipality employee may come to you. If in doubt, the municipality will ask you for a medical certificate.

If a temporary physical disability prevents you from getting fingerprinted, you will get a passport that is valid for 1 year. If your disability is permanent, you will get a passport that is valid for 10 years.

Passport lost or stolen

  • If your passport is lost or stolen in the Netherlands, you can immediately apply for a new passport. With this application you will sign a Declaration of Loss. You do not have to report it to the police.
  • If you have insurance against theft, reporting it to the police is recommended, however.
  • If you need to travel immediately, you can request an emergency passport from the Royal Military Police.
  • If you find your old passport, you are required to turn it in to the municipality. This is because this passport is no longer valid.
  • If you lose your passport abroad, report it to the local police. Ask for written proof of this. You will need this for your insurance. In the Netherlands you do not have to report it to the Dutch police.
  • Report to the Dutch embassy or consulate that your passport has been lost or stolen and request an emergency passport.
  • With the foreign record, you can apply for a new passport at the municipality.

What should I bring?

  • A good-looking passport photo that
  • All passports and identity cards you still have, even if they have expired.
  • If you are applying for a second passport, bring proof that you need the second passport.
  • If your passport was lost or stolen abroad, take the foreign record with you.
  • Debit card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.

Children up to age 18

  • Written consent from both parents or the person with custody of the child. Use the form provided by the municipality for this purpose. You can also both sign on the spot, then you do not need to bring a completed form.
  • (Copy of) the proof of identity of both parents or the person with custody of the child.
  • Children must be present in person when applying for and collecting their passports.
  • At least one parent or guardian must be present at the time of application.
  • A good-looking passport photo not older than 6 months at the time of application. This passport photo meets the passport photo requirements.
  • All passports and ID cards you still have of your child, even if they have expired.
  • Debit card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.

How long does it take?

You can pick up your passport after 6 working days. If you made an urgent application in the morning, you can pick up your passport the next business day.

If you no longer have your old passport and you have no other proof of identity, the municipality conducts research to determine your identity. As a result, it may take longer for you to get your passport.

As of Oct. 1, only with passport to the United Kingdom (UK)

From October 1, 2021, Dutch citizens will only enter the United Kingdom (UK) with a valid passport. The Dutch ID card will then no longer count as a travel document for the UK. This applies to:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales and
  • Northern Ireland.

Due to corona, other conditions may also apply for the round trip to the UK.

Additional information

  • If you are not a Dutch national, you may be eligible for a Refugee Passport or an Alien Passport.
  • If you are under guardianship, you need permission from the guardian to apply for a passport.
  • If you change your name, you must apply for a new passport.
  • If you change gender, you must apply for a new passport.

Applying from abroad

Dutch nationals living abroad can apply for a passport at a large number of Dutch representations, such as consulates and embassies. Or at one of the border municipalities in the Netherlands. Such an application involves many different documents.
