Social housing, declaration of urgency

What is it?

If you are in an emergency situation and need housing urgently, you can apply for a declaration of urgency. An urgency declaration gives you priority in your search for social housing. For example, you may need a declaration of urgency if:

  • your relationship is over and you - with your child(ren) - have to leave home
  • there are money problems that are not your fault and that you could not have prevented
  • you are seriously ill and can no longer live in your home
  • your house will be demolished

How does it work?

Strict conditions apply with a declaration of urgency. For example:

  • The emergency is not your fault. Is there a rent debt or forced sale? Then you will only receive a declaration of urgency if you cannot do anything about it yourself. For example, because you lost your job. Or if your partner - who paid everything with his or her salary - has left.
  • You could not prevent the problem.
  • You did everything you could to find a home.

The municipality always investigates whether you are really in an emergency situation. Sometimes a medical examination is required.

What to do.

  • You apply for a declaration of urgency with your municipality. The municipality decides whether you will receive a declaration of urgency.
  • After that, you will start looking for housing yourself with a housing association.
