Social housing, urgent housing certificate

What is it?

If you are in an emergency situation and urgently need housing, you can apply for an urgent housing certificate. With an urgent housing certificate, you will be given priority when searching for social housing. You may need an urgent housing certificate if, for example:

  • your relationship is over and you—along with your child(ren)—have to move out of the house
  • there are financial problems that are not your fault and that you could not have prevented
  • you are seriously ill and can no longer live in your home
  • your house is being demolished

How does it work?

Strict conditions apply to an urgent declaration. For example:

  • The emergency situation is not your fault. Are you facing rent arrears or forced sale? Then you will only receive an urgent housing certificate if you are unable to do anything about it yourself. For example, because you have lost your job. Or if your partner—who paid for everything with his or her salary—has left.
  • You couldn't prevent the problem.
  • You have done everything you can to find a house.

The municipality always investigates whether you are truly in an emergency situation. Sometimes a medical examination is required.

What should I do?

  • You apply for an urgent housing certificate from your municipality. The municipality decides whether you will receive an urgent housing certificate.
  • After that, you will search for a home yourself through a housing association.

What do I need?

Documents that can prove your emergency situation.
